Dear Dr. Talia,

I have been sick with a variety of symptoms for many years and still have very few answers. I’m struggling to figure out how to make improvements in my quality of life because I’m not getting the help I need.

Doctor appointments often end in me crying and dejected because I feel I am not believed. What if no doctor ever believes my symptoms? How do I heal from medical gaslighting?

Thank you,

T

Hi T,

Thank you for this question. Navigating illness without clear answers is hard enough. Facing disbelief from the very people meant to help can add an extra layer of emotional pain that’s difficult to describe.

You are not alone in feeling dejected after medical appointments. I’ve been there many times myself. Medical gaslighting — when symptoms are dismissed, minimized, or questioned — is far too common.

Below I’ll share multiple perspectives and insights: 1) From my experience; 2) From research; 3) For your reflection; 4) For your practice; and 5) For self-compassion.
